John Hayakawa Torok is a critical race theorist and a recovering New York lawyer. He trained at the NYU, Columbia, and CUNY Law Schools. His Ethnic Studies Ph.D. from U.C. Berkeley focused on racism and labor migration in U.S. law. He participated in the Oakland Livable Wage Assembly. A member of the San Francisco chapter of the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance, AFL-CIO, he is active in the Bay Area as a rank and file leader in the California state civil service workers union, SEIU Local 1000. He lives in Oakland, California.
